Nov. 21, AUSTIN, TX. The
rental is not a Corvette. It's not even a Chevy. It's a white Dodge Neon.
To its credit, the un-Vette does get us across Texas in time for the next
TV interview and bookstore reading. And yes, it uses a lot less gas along
the way. But oh! What a price it forces us to pay in style! With
every passing mile, Rosie and I can feel the un-Vette sucking the mojo
right out of us. By the time we reach Austin, we are limp and longing for
our missing automotive pack-member. Thank the goddess for the shot of good
vibes we receive at the reading from the bookstore owner and her partner
and Sparky the beagle, and the two ladies celebrating a birthday and their
ten-year anniversary. Good talk, much tail wagging, and hugs all around
give us the strength to go on.
P.S. Note dent on the un-Vette's
front fender, the exact size and shape of a bobcat's head. Poor,
beautiful, desperately leaping bobcat. Despite my best effort at an
evasive maneuver, darting across an interstate late at night on a sudden
whim was the last, worst decision he ever made.
