Nov. 17, LOS ANGELES, CA. Cliquish,
insider, dinner-party snapshot, like the kind you see in Elle Home
Decor magazine where, when they show homes of famous people, or people
who know famous people, they always stick in snapshots of dinner parties
with "celebrity" guests everybody knows, or at least people
everybody in their circle knows, as if, if you don't know these people you
must be such a looooo--ser. But if you don't know any of the people in this
picture, take heart: This particular LA dinner party took place right
after my reading and included some people even I didn't know until that
night. And the audience at the reading included twice as many people I
didn't know as people I knew. Among the people I didn't know, several had
made advance plans to be there, while half a dozen were passers-by who
paused as I started to read, stood there a while, then eventually sat down
and stayed for the duration. I may not be nervous about reading in front
of a group anymore, but watching my words have an effect on people is
still a thrill. They asked many, many questions, including: Does Rosie get
carsick? And my personal favorite: Is Bush telling us the truth about
Iraq?
